Attorney John W. Heiderscheidt attends Amundsen Park Rally in Support of Residents
Attorney John W. Heiderscheidt attended a rally in support of community members in Amundsen Park. The City of Chicago is pushing to have the Amundsen Park field house turned into a temporary housing facility for migrants. The field house could hold up to 200 migrants however, it would be taking away a valuable place for after-school activities. In a community of at-risk youths, the field house is a vital part of keeping kids in a safe environment and off the street.
While Heiderscheidt agrees that migrants need shelter, he also understands the importance of members of the community having a voice. “It is imperative for the city to immediately find viable, realistic humane living quarters for new arrivals. The city cannot simply ignore the zoning laws that have been firmly established. All city residents, citizens and migrants alike, have the right to dignity, respect, and consideration in the way this man-made disaster is being managed.”
